Passive
When challenging an enemy, they take 1 damage. KO from this effect counts as battle KO.
Basic Info
Theme

Iru (イル Iru), is one of the playable characters in 100% Orange Juice!. She was added to the game in DLC 20 alongside Mira. Iru originates from the game SUGURI, in which she is one of the bosses.

Passives

  • When challenging an enemy, the enemy takes 1 damage before the battle begins.
    • If the enemy is KO'd from this effect, this counts as a regular battle KO.

Notes

  • The term "Challenge" refers only to the optional battles while on the field. Therefore, Battles started by cards such as Gentleman's Battleicon Gentleman's Battle will not trigger Iru's passive.
  • Bounty Battles count as Iru initiating battle, allowing her to deal 1 damage.

Overview

Armed with a powerful photon rifle and tomboy-ish personality, Iru is a character built for bullying other characters by consistently dealing the first strike in combat. While lacking stat power, Iru's most notable and powerful trait is her passive ability that, similar to Ceoreparque, provides Iru with a rare "guaranteed damage" effect. When instigating a battle with another player, Iru automatically deals a single point of damage at the battle's start, before any dice are rolled or cards are played, and then gets to attack first. As one might expect, the primary advantages of this passive is twofold. When facing 1 HP opponents, Iru can essentially "snipe" them with the passive's guaranteed point of damage and receive the rewards of a usual battle victory with zero risk or effort. Likewise, when facing any opponent, the effect is still extremely beneficial as it grants a guaranteed extra point of damage which, in the case of low HP opponents, can be the difference between a KO or not. The passive is also particularly potent against tanks such as Fernet and Kyousuke, as relentless attacks can quickly chip away at their large HP pool at double the speed. Consequently, the effect is also more or less a hard counter to Kyoko, as her inability to evade Iru's second attack means a KO is guaranteed in 2 battles if not at full HP. On the other side of the spectrum, the passive is also useful on targets with inherently small supplies of HP such as Nanako and Peat which can be any easy source of wins if the player can keep entering combat with them and survive the counter attack. Boards with the Air RaidAir Raid

effect can also be very useful in providing a constant flow of low HP opponents for Iru, assuming the air raid damage does not finish the opponent before Iru's passive can.

Despite the power of her passive, Iru has two key disadvantages; the first being that she is "too good" at one particular thing, at the detriment of having no other notable strengths. While Iru is excellent at sniping opponents at 1 HP, her key source of free victories is one that is often sought after, and hotly pursued, by other opponents. Playing against other characters that are good at securing KO's against low HP opponents can make it difficult for Iru to capitalize on the effect. The second and more obvious weakness is a more general unreliability with the rest of her kit. With neutral stats across the board and a random, often unreliable Hyper, Iru is a bit match-up dependent. Against tanks and characters with +1 or lower ATK, Iru should have a decent chance of success, but against +2 ATK opponents, her strike first strategy becomes somewhat of a game of rocket tag, as she is somewhat likely to take big damage in return. Lastly, given that Iru's passive does not work against Mass encount0 Encounter and Mass encount1 Boss panels, the player may need unconventional strategies in order to safely approach neutral enemies, as Iru's offensive capabilities when isolated from her talent are just average at best.

Summary

"I'll shoot you all down." ―Iru

Effect

Iru's Hyper is Extended Photon Rifle. When used, 1 point of damage will be dealt to a random non-KO'd unit except the player. This effect is performed a number of times equal to the player's level. The player gains 1 Win for every unit KO'd by this effect.

Strategy

Extended Photon Rifle is a Hyper that gets more powerful the longer the game persists, although its cost also grows along with it. Even so, due to the Hyper's random nature, KOs from full HP are all but impossible against a large portion of the cast, meaning it is best used for KOs only when most opponents are at low HP.

Because of its scaling cost, playing this card when going for Stars Norma becomes less rewarding as the game progressed. However, it can still beneficial in the right scenarios. If an opponent is in front of you, you can play the Hyper to shave their HP down, to potentially have an easier time KOing them in direct combat. Iru's passive can greatly help with this strategy. In addition, the Hyper can be used to discourage opponents from attacking by lowering their HP before they even reach you. However, even these potential ways that the Hyper can benefit the player can be difficult to achieve due to the random targeting, and as such it is an overall fairly unreliable Hyper.

Playstyle

Iru can be seen primarily as a tankbuster, utilizing her passive as a way to dish out additional damage to characters with high DEF and/or low EVD like Fernet. Few characters can stifle tanks through repeated combat like Iru can, often damaging them for at least 2 HP each challenge. Her passive can be useful in many applications, however. She is great at sniping characters at 1 HP, guaranteeing KOs if she is able to challenge them on the field, while also being able to 'snipe' characters with 2 HP, albeit with more risk - especially if their EVD is high. Iru can use her Hyper to further weaken her opponents - making them easier to KO with her passive. With neutral ATK, Iru should focus more on star normas. This doesn't mean she is completely inept at pursuing wins, however - quite far from it, as she can easily defeat weaker attackers by constantly putting pressure on them with her passive and rake in even more wins by using her Hyper.

Tips

Playing As Iru
  • Long-Distance Shoticon Long-Distance Shot allows Iru to lower other players' HP to bring them closer to 1 and allow her to pick them off with her passive.
  • I'm on Fire!icon I'm on Fire! forms an uncanny combination with the aforementioned card, allowing her to boost her offences just enough to make securing 1 HP snipes that much easier, for a mere 5 star cost. Big Magnumicon Big Magnum can also serve as a higher risk, but higher reward late-game substitute. Other offensive cards are usually not worth bringing, as they grant more comeback potential to a wider range of cast members.
  • Serious Battleicon Serious Battle and Reverse Attribute Fieldicon Reverse Attribute Field will not affect Iru's completely neutral statline, allowing her to freely lower the stats of other players and, more importantly, the Boss.
  • Mimicicon Mimic is a solid choice, as Iru's Hyper is often very weak, not affecting the game that much. Mimic allows Iru to copy hopefully stronger Hypers from other characters. This still has the chance to backfire, as other characters in the game may also want Mimic.
  • Sealed Guardianicon Sealed Guardian and Forced Revivalicon Forced Revival can be used to set players to 1 HP. However, due to their high cost they are recommended to be used in conjunction with Play of the Godsicon Play of the Gods, and often not great picks anyway due to their unreliable nature.
  • President's Privilegeicon President's Privilege can be a niche pick to lower the cost of Forced Revivalicon Forced Revival and Sealed Guardianicon Sealed Guardian. It also has the added benefit of lowering the cost of Iru's Hyper, as well as battle cards like Big Magnumicon Big Magnum, for that turn.
  • Rbitsicon Rbits is a good conservative pick, as it massively ups her survival potential if she is to land on an Mass encount0 Encounter or Mass encount1 Boss panel. Anyone who uses it as a countermeasure against her is forced to take some additional damage, when they could usually just evade her actual attack. However, as her bulk is average at best, it also lets offensive powerhouses like Tomomo fight into her a lot more safely.
  • Iru can bully low EVD characters such as Marc due to their low EVD causing them to be unlikely to evade Iru's attack, meaning most fights will cause 2 damage.
  • Iru can also put pressure on tanks like Kyoko to keep their HP up, as they cannot hit back well and usually will also have low EVD.
Playing Against Iru
  • Healing cards can keep player's HP far from 1 making it harder for Iru to get a free KO from her passive. Dinnericon Dinner is especially irritating for her in this regard, since it will heal everyone's HP whenever one player uses it.
  • Iru can have trouble KOing high EVD characters such as Sora and will have to rely on her passive more. Consequently, EVD boosts, such as that given by Rainbow-Colored Circleicon Rainbow-Colored Circle, can completely deny her a kill, or at the very least delay it enough to allow for some slack in formulating your backup plan.
  • Serene Hushicon Serene Hush has a similar effect, either denying Iru opportunities to get damage in, or delaying her snipes for a long enough time to let someone else capitalize. Here and Thereicon Here and There is also comparable and easier to spam, albeit a lot less reliable.
  • Though still an avid user of cards, most of Iru's power is baked into her passive. Using card control such as Gift Exchangeicon Gift Exchange is, as a result, less impactful against her.
